Migrant Resource Centre Students
18 March, 2021

As we welcome back the Migrant Resource Centre Students to Fred French and Peace Haven for this year’s student placement program, the team hosted a food “Taster Day”. Nancy, Programs Coordinator from Migrant Resource Centre quoted – “A review process of previous programs with the Migrant Resource Centre (Northern Tasmania) Inc identified a lack of knowledge and understanding of typical Australian foods that are used every day within Masonic Care Tas facilities.

Innovative thinking on the part of team leaders resulted in a presentation to the current group of students which allowed them to taste foods such as Weet-Bix, marmalade and vegemite for the first time. The inclusion of this “Taster Day” should make it more familiar for students to participate in their work placement as part of the Catering team. It was also a wonderful activity to help celebrate Harmony Week.

All 12 students expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to gain a better understanding of meal preparations and dietary requirements of residents.
